Dr. Touch Tanks Sea Life Presentation Held on Lucia Beach, Maine!Excerpted from, http://www.macdougalschool.org/index.html Each year MacDougal School participates in a nutrition and health event, sponsored by Maine-ly Nutrition. To honor our area's fishing heritage, this year's event was held at Birch Point State Park (Lucia Beach) and incorporated a lesson in marine life taught by Robert Sterling of Touch Tanks for Kids™. Robert Sterling, better known to the kids as Dr. Touch Tanks, is an aquaculture specialist working with Touch Tanks for Kids™. Touch Tanks for Kids™, located in Biddeford, is a Maine based, non - profit organization, dedicated to bringing awareness of marine life and improving marine science education in Maine. During our pick-nick lunch, classes took turns visiting Dr. Touch Tanks who was on the beach with his tank of live marine creatures. After Dr. Touch Tanks introduce each species to the children, he then gave them the opportunity to handle the creature and to ask questions. During the presentation, Dr. Touch Tanks gave each student a periwinkle to hold. He then asked the kids to "hum" to their periwinkle, which the students very happily and with many giggles, did! To our amazement, in no time at all, the periwinkles poked their heads right out of their shells. It appears that periwinkles like to be hummed to...who knew! |
